Can You Freeze Applesauce?

I like to make applesauce all the time, and I like to make a lot at once because I do not have a lot of free time. I usually make 4 jars of applesauce in a month. Sometimes, my family would be able to use them all up, but there are times when we get some leftovers. Could I freeze them for longer storage?

Applesauce can be used in a lot of recipes and is definitely something that most households have. The nice thing about it is that it can be stored in the freezer to be used for later.

Applesauce is something that you can make by bulk, and you can store easily. All you have to do is put them in air tight bags, seal them well, and dump it in the freezer. They can last for months or within a year when stored well.

Can You Freeze Applesauce?

Applesauce can be frozen in order to last longer. It is very easy to freeze, and is super hassle free.

Frozen applesauce could be stored for 3 months up to a year, while refrigerated ones could only last for a week or two.

When freezing applesauce, be sure to leave some space in the bottle or container you are using to give it some room to expand.

You can freeze your applesauce by canning, but if this process seems tedious to you or you do not have the right tools, you can always use some mason jars or air tight freezer bags.

Some people like to add spices in their applesauce. If you’re one of them, be sure to put the spices after thawing. Spices lose flavor when frozen, so it is better to add them once the applesauce has defrosted.

It is advisable to pack your applesauce in amounts that you intend to use for one recipe to prevent thawing and refreezing.

How to Freeze Applesauce

The easiest and most convenient way to freeze applesauce is through freezer bags. This way, you can split the applesauce in your desired amounts.

  • Cool thoroughly the freshly made applesauce before putting them into the container.
  • Place the applesauce in air tight freezer bags or freezer jars. Leave some space to give the applesauce some room to expand. You can also can them – sterilize your jars, put the applesauce inside, seal them, and then boil them. A lot of people recommend canning them because they make the applesauce safer, but if it’s too much work for you, freezer bags or jars can be a good option. Be sure to seal them well.
  • Label the containers with the date the applesauce was made and then put them inside the refrigerator.
  • When you want to use some applesauce, get the bags or containers from the freezer and thaw them in the refrigerator. You can also thaw it by putting it in a bowl and popping it into the microwave on the lowest setting.
